Rodney Dangerfield's Lifelong Romance With Marijuana PDF Print E-mail

The comedian’s widow gave this talk at the Patients Out of Time conference on cannabis therapeutics in Santa Barbara April 7.

If Rodney were here today he would say something brilliant. He would probably open with a marijuana joke. He’d say, “I tell ya, that marijuana really has an effect on you. The other day I smoked a half a joint and I got so hungry, I ate the other half.”

Rodney had a fantastically unique mind. Few people knew he was a mathematical genius, but everyone knew he was hilarious. His humor was a razor thrust into social hypocrisy and the little injustices of life. He wrote “killers” and made the world laugh.

Another thing that was not widely known about Rodney is that he endured quite a bit of personal suffering in his life. He was heartbreakingly neglected as a child. We’ve all heard the expression “the tears of a clown,” and in many ways Rodney embodied that experience. Like most geniuses, the special chemistry that created his remarkable mind also created certain psychological challenges. Acute anxiety and manic depression were congenital issues that plagued Rodney’s life.

To give you an idea of how his anxiety would manifest itself, Rodney couldn’t sit still. In Caddyshack, his character, Al Cervic, is constantly fidgeting like he’s about to burst out of his skin. The truth is, this was no act. Rodney was under duress. He felt Chevy Chase was talking too slowly and it got on his nerves. Rodney’s impatience would come out through his body. The pace of the whole world was too slow for him until he found marijuana.

Rodney first lit up back in 1942 when he was 21. He was hanging out with a comic named Bobby Byron and his friend Joe E. Ross —some of you might remember Joe E. Ross from Car 54. They went to the Belvedere Hotel in New York where Bobby lived. The night would prove to have such an impact on Rodney’s life that he even remembered the room number they were in —1411.

Although he was supposed to be enjoying himself with friends, Rodney was characteristically agitated and anxiety ridden. It’s how he felt every day of his life to that point. But when Rodney got high, he couldn’t believe it.

For the first time in his life, he left relaxed and peaceful, and had a sense of well-being. That night marijuana became a new friend that would be in Rodney’s life for the next 62 years.

I met Rodney in 1983, and after a 10-year courtship, Rodney and I enjoyed 11 years of marriage. I must admit that when I became a part of Rodney’s life, I did not approve of his marijuana use. My Mormon background hadn’t given me experience with any illegal substances and I was always afraid Rodney would get arrested. Rodney was concerned about my feelings and agreed to look for legal alternatives to treat his ailments. Over the years we consulted the best experts we could find in search of legal anti-anxiety and pain medications and even tried Marinol. But nothing worked for him the way real marijuana did.

A couple of years ago Rodney was in the process of writing his autobiography, in which he wanted to be very candid about everything in his life. He even wanted to title the book “My Lifelong Romance with Marijuana.” I was sure then that Rodney would be arrested. So I looked for, and found, Dr. David Bearman here in Santa Barbara.

Dr. Bearman examined Rodney and obtained records from Rodney’s other doctors for review. In addition to his anxiety and depression, at the time Rodney’s medical conditions included constant pain from the congenital fusion of his spine, an inoperable dislocated shoulder and rotator-cuff tear and arthritis. Rodney wasn’t able to take traditional pain medications because of their interactions with his blood-thinning medication, Coumadin.

A New York City man attempted to stash marijuana in a Delaware state trooper’s patrol car Friday after his companion was pulled over for speeding, police said.

Delaware State Police said around 2:55am local time, a trooper on routine patrol stopped a 2010 Chevy Imapala that was driving 65 mph (105 kph) in a 40 mph (64 kph) zone on Coastal Highway in Dewey Beach, Del. The trooper smelled marijuana coming from the car and made its occupants wait inside his patrol car as he conducted a search.

The officer found no illegal substances inside the Impala.

But when he walked back to his patrol car and started to smell marijuana again, the trooper had to search on his own vehicle.

Edward Peterson of Jamaica, Queens, had been a passenger in the Impala. The trooper forced him to get out of the patrol car and discovered that Peterson was trying to hide two bags of a leafy green substance in his seat, the state police said.

The trooper confirmed that the substance was marijuana, and seized all 1.8 grams. Peterson, 24, was arrested for possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia, but was later released on a $750 unsecured bond. Increase your website traffic with Attracta.com

Living in the rural areas where there is tall grass and bushes everywhere, lie’s a creature that can make you very ill from its bite. There are many different species of ticks, but only few are able to infect us with a deadly virus. Emedicine.com- “Ticks are arthropods, like spiders. There are more than 800 species of ticks throughout the world.” It’s true to say that they are uncontrollable and can attach to anyone of any age. Unfortunately, there is barely much you can do about the number of them in your yards and surrounding woodlands. They can travel with many different animals like; dogs, cats, cattle, raccoons, rabbits and humans. They are attracted to warm, dark spots of the body barely visible with the human eye, making them even harder to spot. I think all could agree a bug clinging to your skin without your knowledge is rather creepy and scary.

I’m sure we all remember one time or another child or adult, discovering one stuck on us. Emedicine.com-“Ticks are the leading carriers (vectors) of diseases to humans in the United States, second only to mosquitoes worldwide.” That is a staggering comparison statement considering West Nile Virus is at fault to so many lost lives through the years. Along with other life threatening illnesses mosquitos’ carry pose a high threat as well. In schools nationwide, health classes teach children proper behavior to prevent Deer Tick bites. There are known precautions that can be made to prevent them from biting such as; long sleeves, jeans, boots, long socks and checking yourselves, along with children, on a basis after being in the garden, lawn or anywhere they could possibly dwell. Promptly remove the tick with tweezers, making sure to remove all the legs from the skin, wrap it in foil, bring to your doctor to have it cleared as a tick with Lyme disease or not. Deer tick bites left untreated show a red, target like ring around the surface area of the bite, resulting in “ Lyme Disease” or “Lyme Borreliosis.” This is a serious matter, resulting in so much pain that you may end up in a wheel chair or even bed stricken for days at a time. It takes away the enjoyable aspects of life and can make you’re everyday routine miserable. We all know suffering from intense pain is no laughing matter, and being nocuous constantly is a burden within it’s self. This is what this disease places in you’re body, sucking precious time from your life, you’re mind as well.

Many doctors treat this disease with a regiment of antibiotics. This is the efficient way to cure this disease. Although antibiotics can upset you’re stomach, affecting appetite severely. Which can result in weight loss as the disease progress. Headaches come and go and can include wretched migraines. They can be so unforgiving and punishable taking a toll on you every single time. Regular sleeping patterns will be constantly interrupted causing chronic fatigue and disrupting ones circadian rhythm. Brutal sharp pains running all the way up your temples causing pain in your forehead and eyes. Stiffness down your neck, back, legs and joints can make you feel helpless, tired and irritable. Lyme disease can come and go, but for some it wont let up. In most severe cases, this is classified as “ Chronic Lyme Disease” with people suffering constantly, not in spurts.

L.A. finds only a quarter of registered pot dispensaries eligible to stay open PDF Print E-mail

City clerk says 41 of 169 medical marijuana shops that registered in 2007 meet the new ordinance's requirements. Ousted operators express shock and outrage; city lawyers gear up for more litigation.

Los Angeles officials announced Wednesday that only 41 medical marijuana dispensaries are eligible to stay in business under the city's restrictive ordinance, a number so low that the city will suspend the winnowing process and ask a judge to rule that it is legal.

"It was a surprise," said Jane Usher, a special assistant city attorney who worked closely with the City Council to draft the complex medical marijuana law and is defending it in court. >p> After a two-month review of dispensary records, the city clerk determined that three-quarters of the 169 dispensaries that applied to remain open did not meet the requirements in the ordinance. Some of the ineligible dispensaries are among the most reputable in the city.

Yamileth Bolanos, who runs PureLife Alternative Wellness Center and is one of the most politically active operators, found out her dispensary was ineligible when the city clerk posted the list on its website. She rocked rapidly between anger and distress. "I'm not going to take this lying down," she said. "This is ridiculous. They have screwed up one thing after another."
